Just ask yourself, who else in the security industry provides you with a "No Break-in Guarantee?" Just us… that's who. The most critical function in layering is using products and systems that work together to enhance security.īoss Security Screens should always be one of your first considerations in a layered approach. Regardless of which brand you go with, ensure you are getting the quality, features, and support you need to maintain an effective security system. Others you will surely recognize like Nest, Ring, and Wyze, are also popular. ![]() Names like Arlo, Lorex, Reolink, Hikvision, Adiance, and Axis are well respected and have a large footprint in the field of cameras/systems. While I am willing to entertain an off-brand for some things, little-known companies or start-ups may not provide what you are looking for in a system. So the difference between providers can come down to reputation, customer service and support, and warranties. Are they paid for their recommendations, or are they conducting objective consumer comparisons? With the proliferation of shared technology, camera systems can incorporate the same technologies as other systems under different branding. These are just a few of my favorites, but like any online source, make sure you vet and consider whose interest they represent. There is no need for me to complete any independent analysis of current systems when plenty of online sources have the resources and experts to make such camera recommendations. I will skip over large companies and major corporations because these entities have specific needs that require more sophisticated analysis and extensive discovery processes to ensure that all threats get addressed. Since we have previously covered many mechanical devices in other blogs, I will focus on camera systems for residential and small businesses. For example, in my former Casino security position, facial recognition was a critical option to alert teams to the presence of people of interest or those who were previously trespassed from the property and attempted to return without permission. This includes things like key control and restricted access to critical infrastructure/network security areas, general movement throughout the building using badges or biometric controls that log activity throughout the organization, integrated security camera systems with facial recognition, zone controls, and real-time alerts that provide immediate notice when potential breaches are occurring. In commercial settings, you will need to consider some or all of the above-mentioned measures, but you must also consider access and control within the physical environment. For residential customers, you will also want to address network access such as VPN (virtual networks), firewalls, multi-factor authentication, and virus protection via email, internet access, and USB devices. Additionally, you would add mechanical devices such as security screens like Boss Security Screens produces, camera systems, motion sensors, glass breakage sensors, and alarm systems. For example, in residential applications, you generally refer to implementing CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles such as landscaping, lighting, upgrading door/ window locks, and adding stronger anchors to hold them in place. The term "Layered Security" has different meanings depending on what area of security you are addressing. We must also address the other vulnerabilities for total protection, such as our networks, software applications, and building access. ![]() Security protections must extend well beyond the confines of physical security, i.e., deterrence measures through design, access controls, and detection. The business of providing outstanding security protections for residential and commercial customers requires that I take a holistic approach when evaluating their specific goals, needs, and vulnerabilities.
